Sustainability
Making sustainable small batch perfumes
I believe it's possible to craft luxurious scents with a positive impact on the environment and community. Honestly, I don't think I'm completely there yet... it's a journey. Each time I make a decision around sourcing materials or formulation, revising packaging design or developing partnerships, sustainability is something I am trying to improve. Here are the steps I'm currently taking to make Liminus an accountable and sustainable perfume house.
Transparency
Perfume formulations are closely protected intellectual property and labelling regulations don't require a full list of ingredients. However, I like to know what goes into the products I'm buying, it's one way to make ethical and sustainable choices.
I choose to be fully transparent in my labelling practices so customers can see exactly what is in their perfume.
Packaging
Liminus packaging is designed with the environment in mind. Outer boxes uses FSC® certified (FSC® C006462), CO2 neutral, Cradle to Cradle Certified® Silver card stock. Travel and 10 ml atomisers are reusable and refillable. Stickers are printed on eco-vinyl (manufactured with PET rather than PVC. PVC takes hundreds of years to decompose where as PET takes around 5-10. It also doesn't release the same chemicals as PVC into the environment).
Packaging off-cuts have been repurposed into note cards, saving a valuable resource that may otherwise have gone to waste and where possible I reuse packaging material from my suppliers to wrap orders.
Avoiding waste & choosing renewable
Zero waste perfume refills are available, allowing you to enjoy perfume without complex packaging.
I source biodegradable nitrile gloves for lab work and I manage workflows to limit the use of single use plastics in my perfumery.
My small-batch production methods also allow to me to minimise waste. I tailor the size of each batch to ensure that the precious botanicals I use (which have very high embodied energy) are used with respect for the whole supply chain.
Where possible I reuse packaging material from my suppliers to wrap orders and Liminus uses 100 per cent renewable energy.
Positive contributions to nature
With every perfume refill sold, Liminus donates $5 to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC). The TLC is a not-for-profit, apolitical, science and community-based organisation that raises funds from the public to protect irreplaceable sites and rare ecosystems by buying and managing private land in Tasmania.
External review and recognition
It's always a good idea for others to take a look at your business and benchmark your performance. In 2024 Alba was awarded in the Clean and Conscious natural perfume category and in 2025, Thamnic was awarded a Diamond Sustainability award and also a bronze in the Clean and Conscious Awards.
When I choose suppliers, I'm looking for B Corp certified business and environmental certifications to ensure the upstream impacts of my business are minimised.
Sourcing sustainable perfume materials
Sourcing quality materials is an important part of my work. I look for materials with ethical, transparent and local supply chains. I also feature Tasmanian grown and sourced products in each perfume I make, sometimes harvesting and forage small amounts of native and locally grown materials to tincture.
